Ardrossan Winton Rovers 1 v 4 Lanark United

Report submitted by Craig Martin

Lanark had another fantastic away day result with this thumping win over Ardrossan who could have overtaken Lanark with a win but instead slipped to 9th place in an incredibly tight league with Lanark jumping to top position along with Shettleston and The Gow.

The home side had the better of the opening play pressing Lanark back and allowing them only an occasional break away, it was from one of these that Lanark created their first chance when a good ball from Scott Nicol found Kieran Brannan on the right, he in turn set Josh Gracie in on goal big a good challenge broke up the move and Ardrossan went up field quickly and it took a good save from Gareth Hallford in the Lanark goal to keep the scores level.

Lanark had better success with their next move when good work from Jordan Fraser set Gracie free on the right again this time he cut into the penalty area beating three defenders before firing an unstoppable shot in to the net for 1-0 after 12 minutes.

Things got even better for Lanark a minute later when great work from Brannan allowed him to get James Martin free on the left and he again cut inside his marker before curling a superb second goal for Lanark past the home keeper for 2-0.

The game continued to be end to end with both sides attacking but not creating any clear cut chances until in the 30th minute an excellent ball from Shug Kerr found Brannan in the opposition penalty area and a deft flick put the ball in to the path of Gracie who again beat his marker before firing Lanark in to a 3-0 lead with his second goal of the match.

Lanark’s last chance of the half came when a clearing punch from Hallford found Martin who played the ball on to Brannan, his switch of play allowed Sean Lindsay free on goal but a last ditch challenge ended the move.

Half time

Ardrossan Winton Rovers 0 v 3 Lanark United

The home side started the second half well again pressing Lanark back playing down the slope and it came as no surprise when they got the next goal after a throw in saw a glancing header from Nicol fall kindly for Campbell who placed a shot wide of Hallford to make the score 3-1 with just under an hour played.

The home side kept pushing for a second goal and it took a good block from Kerr after a corner to keep Lanark’s lead at two clear goals.

Lanark fought their way back in to the match and a ball down the right from Cammy Lawson found Brannan and his strength got him away from his marker but after getting in to the box his low shot was turned away for a corner, when this was played in pushing in the area went the way of Lanark when the referee awarded them a penalty, Kerr was assigned the duty of the kick and made no mistake sending the keeper the wrong way as he put his side 4-1 up with twenty minutes left to play.

Lanark had a decent spell after this goal with Gracie and Kerr linking up well before Kerr’s shot was turned away for another corner and from this a Brannan header went just wide. Then an excellent ball from the impressive Mark Haddow found Kerr but yet another good save denied him a second goal, Ardrossan broke from this with a long ball setting them on the attack but some great defending from Lawson snuffed out the danger.

With the match in to stoppage time Hallford brought off the save of the match when he turned a thunderous shot from 12 yards over the bar for a corner.

The last chance of the match fell to Lanark however when Ian Watt was set clear on the right but after getting in to the box his low shot was again well saved to keep the score at 4-1 to the visitors.
