Lanark United 1 v 1 Shettleston FC

Lanark went in to this last match before next weeks Sectional League Cup final on the back of two defeats but put in a much better performance with the addition of a few ‘big’ players back in to the squad.

Lanark allowed their visitors a couple of early chances with home keeper Colin McGraw having to make a good save with his feet after only 2 minutes.

Lanark were also keen to attack and on 4 minutes James Martin drove down the left but his cross was held by the Shettleston keeper.

The visitors should have taken the lead in the 12th min when Graham cut the home defence open and played a good ball in but Khan Young blasted the ball over the bar with the goal gaping.

The game was now flowing from end to end and Lanark created a decent chance when a throw in was well controlled by Jordan Conlon who laid the ball in to the path of Ian Watt but the strikers shot went wide of the target, then a fantastic run from Josh Gracie from the left saw him cut into the opposition box but his end shot just dipped too late as it went over the crossbar.

The last chance of the half came for the visitors when Lanark lost possession in the middle of the park and Graham was allowed a shot on goal but fortunately it went wide.

Although Lanark had the better of the second half it was in fact Shettleston who created an early chance when Graham saw a close range shot strike the bar before it was cleared.

Lanark then saw a chance of there own when Shug Kerr broke down the left but his cut back was just missed by Watt at the back post then a loose ball was picked up by Sean Lindsay but his shot went wide of the target.

Lanark were playing well at this stage with Martin causing problems for the visiting defence with his runs down the left and it was from one of these where he reached the bye line that Lanark opened the scoring, Martins cut back found Gracie on the edge of the area and he had better fortune than he did in the first half when his thunderous right foot strike found the postage stamp corner of the net for a glorious opener for Lanark for 1-0 after 66 mins.

Lanark were pegged back however in the 72nd minute when Mark Haddow was injured in a challenge that ended in a corner for the visitors and Haddow having to leave the pitch after treatment, from the ensuing corner the ball was not cleared and ended with Graham and despite McGraw getting a foot to his shot he could not keep the ball out and the scores were level at 1-1!

The final chance of the match fell to the home side when another good run from Kerr down the left ended with a ball fizzed across goal that Lewis Hill just failed to get a touch on.

A draw was probably a fair result on the day though and a decent performance sets Lanark up for a big test next week at Auchinleck.
