Lanark United 2 v 1 Johnstone Burgh FC.

Lanark took another three vital league points at home on Saturday against a Burgh team who in the first half showed no attacking threat until the 45th minute but looked a much better side as they chased the match in the second.

Lanark took until the 8th minute to put together a decent attack when Dan McHugh was on the end of good build up play and went wide on the right but his high effort on goal was tipped away for a corner that came to nothing.

James Martin linked up with Shug Kerr a couple of minutes later but Kerr’s lay back to Lewis Hill ended with the big strikers shot just wide of the target.

Lanark were making heavy weather of breaking down the mass defence of Johnstone but Cammy Lawson worked a good ball in to the path of Hill but his shot was deflected away for a corner, then Lawson himself saw the visiting keeper spill his free kick on 38 mins but despite Kerr reacting quickest the keeper came out on top.

In the last minutes of the half Burgh won a corner that came off Lawson and looked to be heading in to the top corner of the net but Gareth Hallford pulled off an excellent save to keep the scores level, the stopper had no chance on the stroke of half time however as a long ball found Johnstone’s McCallum who lobbed the ball over him in to the empty net for 1-0 to the visitors.

Lanark started the second half brighter and drew themselves level in the 50th minute when McHugh cut in from the right before linking up well with the returning Stuart Annetts and his ball in to the path of Hill ended with an unstoppable shot high in to the net for 1-1.

Better was to come for Lanark a few minutes later when Martin picked the ball up in the middle of the park before leaving defenders in his wake as he got to the bye line on the right and he put in a sublime cross that was met with an equally good header from Hill to power home his and Lanark’s second goal of the match for 2-1.

Lanark looked in the mood to hammer home their advantage but they struggled to make many clean chances other than a Jordan Fraser header that went just wide of the post after Lawson had set him up then Sam Anderson played a good ball in to Hill who hit a low shot on the turn but the Burgh keeper turned the ball away for a corner.

Lanark had a nervy couple of minutes late on as the visitors pressed them back but a series of poor balls in to the box allowed Hallford and his defence to mop up the situations.
