Lanark United fall at last hurdle away to Rossvale

Lanark away to Rossvale

Macron Scottish Cup 4th Round Replay Saturday 01/12/20108

Rossvale JFC 3 v 1 Lanark United FC.

The home side started this match at a good pace and had Lanark on the back foot early on. They created a chance in the 5th min when McGonigle cut the ball back from the left, but Gareth Hallford in the Lanark goal cut the cross out.

Rossvale were awarded a dubious free kick a minute later when Cammy Lawson was penalised. When it came in, a lucky break saw the ball fall to Niven who volleyed home for 1-0.

Lanark worked their way back in  to the match with Lawson finding Hugh Kerr with a free kick in the 9th min but despite getting an opening on goal his shot went wide of the target.

The best chance of the first half for Lanark came after a good move down the right starting with a Josh Gracie run and link up with Dan McHugh and Kerr. Gracie then played the ball across goal to find Declan Lafferty but he blasted the ball high off the target on 19 mins.

Lanark continued to press Rossvale back and created half chances for McHugh and last week's scorer Ian Watt, neither of which were taken before good pressing from McHugh forced a mistake in the home defence allowing Alan McCrum to steal the ball. He went wide on the left before he cut inside and curled a shot just wide of the far post.

McHugh set Lafferty up for a shot on goal that was blocked away for a corner on 35 mins before the last action of the half saw Hallford make another good save from a McGladrigan header for Rossvale.

Half time Rossvale 1 v 0 Lanark United.

The second half got off to a great start for the visitors when they broke on the left, Lafferty looked to have been impeded but no foul was given, he managed to stab the ball to Watt who took a touch to the right before curling an excellent shot in to the corner of the net to level the scores at 1-1 after 46 mins.

Lanark were playing with confidence and created a chance when Lewis Hill set Watt free but the home defence cut the danger out the Hill and Lafferty combined to set Watt up but his effort again went wide of the goal.

The home side regained the lead in the 58th min when a long ball was not dealt with by Lanark and they were caught flat footed as McGonigle bore down on Hallfords goal before firing a low shot in to the net for 2-1.

Cammy Lawson had a free kick from 25 yards easily saved by Donnelly before Rossvale created a couple of chances of their own when they saw a header go just wide then a slack back pass by Lanark was pounced on but Hallford made another good save to keep the Lanark deficit at one goal.

The home side did look as if they would capitalise on their pressure and did in the 78th min when McGladrigan cut in from the right and put a low shot past Hallford for 3-1.

Lanark had nothing to lose and pushed forward for what remained of the match but despite seeing Watt combine with Jordan Fraser the youngster's shot was blocked before McHugh set Watt up fort a final chance but his effort was saved.

This was Lanarks 6th match in this seasons competition all against teams in divisions above them and they only fell short at the last hurdle and now look to get back in to league action to try to claw back Lesmahagow's lead at the top.
