Tennis Club’s gents first team wins league in return to competitive action

The gents first team are looking forward to another year of competition at the Chapland Road club

The fairy-tale renaissance at Lanark Tennis Club continues with the gents first team winning their league and securing promotion in their return to competitive court action for the first time in 15 years.

The team of Lanarkians secured the league title last Tuesday night with an impressive 8-1 away win at Kirkhill Tennis Club in Cambuslang. This result means the Lanark side top the table and cannot be caught with one more game left to play.

It has been a stunning campaign for the side after dropping only two sets out of a possible 63 so far.

The team is made up of eight local players and many of them learned the game as junior members of the Chapland Road club.

While juniors at Lanark Tennis Club in the 1990s, both David Gemmell and Andrew Jack were selected to represent the West of Scotland county, and Andrew Jack and Peter Stewart are also both former winners of the South of Scotland Junior Championships.

This year has also been a successful campaign for the second team at Lanark who currently sit mid-table after a number of hard fought and thoroughly enjoyable home and away matches.

Theo Philip, first team captain at Lanark Tennis Club, said: “This has been a very enjoyable season for both teams and it is great to see Lanark competing at a regional level once more. To secure promotion before the end of May is a great achievement in our first season back, and we look forward to competing at a higher level next year.”
