Late goal helps Lanark topple Bellshill and progress in Central League Cup

The Royal Burgh outfit will face Cumbernauld United in the next round this weekend

Lanark United booked their place in the third round of the Central League Cup courtesy of a Jordan Moore strike seven minutes before full time.

Colin Slater’s side will host Super First Division side Cumbernauld United in the next round on Saturday and while their opponents compete two leagues above them, Lanark will head into the game full of confidence after some impressive performances in recent outings.

The Yowes were facing Bellshill for the second time in just over a week after their initial encounter was abandoned when Athletic’s Richie Kane suffered a double leg break.

United were 15 minutes away from victory on that occasion and were determined to finish the job on home soil last weekend.

Lanark looked to ask questions of their opposition in the opening exchanges but failed to find a way past the Athletic defence.

Both sides were level at the interval and with the game set to be played to a finish, a tense 45 minutes awaited.

Lanark left it late to find the back of the net wen both sides initially met and they left it even later last weekend when Jordan Moore collected the ball and showed great composure to beat goalkeeper Chris Fitzpatrick with a sublime finish.

Athletic pushed forward in a desperate bid to secure an equaliser but United held firm to advance in the competition.
