Late Dunipace goal consigns Lanark United to defeat

Lanark were unable to take their chances against a spirited Dunipace side

Lanark United suffered a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Dunipace at Moor Park after a late Callum Heeps strike was enough to separate the two sides in an entertaining encounter.

The Royal Burgh outfit created a series of chances throughout the game but Dunipace goalkeeper Sean Robertson was in fine form between the posts to deny the hosts.

Saturday’s result signalled something of a revival for the visitors, who have now taken 10 points from their last four games, while Lanark occupy sixth in the Central District Second Division.

United's trialist goalkeeper Jamie Mitchell made two excellent saves in the opening minutes, blocking a shot from Calum Heeps and turning a strike by Joshua Grace wide for a corner.

The hosts thought they had taken the lead when Ben Fraser’s powerful header looked destined for the back of the net but crashed off the crossbar.

Scott Schoneville then saw his low shot deflected wide as United applied strong pressure, but were unable to break the deadlock before the interval.

Lanark started the second half well and Stuart Annetts forced a corner before a low cross from Schoneville was missed in front of goal by Sean McKenna.

Pace keeper Sean Robertson then produced a string of good saves to deny Shaun Gallagher, Peter O'Donnell and McKenna as United kept up the pressure.

With the clock ticking down, Lanark pressed forward in search of a late winner but were caught out by a quick Dunipace counter and a dangerous cross from the left flank was met by the impressive Heeps who made no mistake from close range.

This blow left United reeling and despite late charge, they were unable to get the ball past the impressive Robertson before the referee sounded the final whistle on a disappointing day for the Moor Park men.
