Wigtownshire consign Lanark to early exit in West Regional Bowl
Iain Hughes’ side are set for a testing trip to Mull this weekend
Lanark Rugby Club lost 22-5 to Wigtownshire in the West Regional Bowl competition at the racecourse on Saturday.
Shire proved to be the stronger outfit being the more effective with ball in hand. Their forwards were always dangerous and it was to Lanark’s credit that they were able to contain them with some determined tackling. They led 15-0 at half time, landing a penalty and scoring two well-worked tries - one being converted.
Lanark had an early advantage on the restart when the visitors had a player red carded and were better able to control play. They made good progress individually, but lacked cohesion when in possession.
Lanark were back in the game following a try by Steve McKeown who was outstanding throughout, particularly with his powerful running and covering tackles.
Lanark’s fightback was short lived when Shire countered with their final one.
Lanark were again in the unfortunate position of not having full cover on the touchline with reserves. The lack of a replacement at scrum half would have avoided their injured president, Iain Hughes, putting club before self and seeing the game out when clearly struggling. Their real test of playing strength will come this Saturday when they have to travel to Mull.
