Embrace January in Lanark and start the year on a high

Article submitted by Discover Lanark BID

With the festivities over and the days short, it’s time to turn the tables on those winter blues and make January one of the most wonderful months of the year. To help you do just that, here are some ideas to bring joy to your January in Lanark.

Walk in the woods

We are truly blessed to live a stone’s throw from the fantastic Falls of Clyde Nature Reserve and New Lanark World Heritage Site. With more time on your hands why not take a weekend walk along the River Clyde to view the majesty of the Corra Linn and Bonnington Linn falls. Once you’ve blown the cobwebs away, you can stop in the village for a cup of tea to warm the cockles and soak up the joie de vivre.

Healthy eating

This goal will be high on most new year lists and with a host of food retail outlets in Lanark, it’s not difficult to find the ingredients for your detox programme or diet plan. Head to Holland and Barrett for seeds, dried fruits, nuts and superfood products, pick up fish in Hugh Black & Sons for a lighter meal, freshly made wholemeal breads in our local bakers and check out alcohol alternatives – to be found in stores in and around the High Street.

Do-It-Yourself

After weeks of socialising, it’s great to get around to those DIY jobs that haven’t been crossed off the to-do list. Whether it’s hanging shelves, fixing guttering, solving plumbing issues or simply changing a light bulb – take the opportunity to measure up, and pop into Jacks the Ironmonger to buy the necessary tools and materials and finish those jobs off once and for all.

Donate to charity

There’s nothing better for the soul than a good clear out and with several charity shops in Lanark, donating your unwanted items couldn’t be easier. As we become more conscious consumers, demand for high quality, second-hand goods have grown to minimise the impact on the environment, whilst raising money for good causes – so when dropping off your bags be sure to browse the shelves for a bargain of your own.

Clean bill of health

In the madness before Christmas, you can be forgiven for putting off a check-up or ignoring niggly health issues, but there’s no time like the present to get that long overdue eye test, dental check or chiropody treatment. Book that physiotherapy session you’ve been too preoccupied to make or try a holistic treatment at Healing Hands and tackle the new year with a healthier body.

Hit the treadmill

It’s an obvious one, but many of us will have over-indulged over Christmas, so how about joining one of the selection of gyms in town? By committing to a membership, you might just find the motivation to try out a new fitness class or start a health regime to take you through the first month of 2020 and beyond. Curtis Brothers, Lanark Lifestyles and New Lanark all offer fitness classes and personal training programmes.

Take up a new hobby

What better way to kick start the new decade than by trying your hand at something different? Strands is the destination if you’ve always fancied knitting or maybe it’s gardening, DIY, yoga or painting for you. With a host of independent retailers in Lanark, able to provide advice as well as supplies, there’s no time like the present to give it a whirl.

Celebrate

As January draws to a close it brings with it cause for celebration. Stock up on your haggis, neeps and tatties as you pay homage to the National Bard. Meanwhile give praise for the lengthening days and carry the impact of your January achievements, no matter how large or small, through the remaining months of 2020.
