Lanark Tennis Club nets brand new Clubhouse

Lanark Tennis Club New Clubhouse

Lanark Tennis Club has raised over £140,000 to fund the build of their new Clubhouse

Lanark Tennis Club, situated on Chapland Road in Lanark, was established in 1908 and has a proud history of providing opportunities for local people to play tennis, of developing junior talent and of competing on a regional scale.

The club is working hard to grow its numbers, with a particular focus on attracting more women and juniors to take up tennis. This winter has seen significant investment in the club with £141,203 having been secured through fund raising, funding and sponsorship to deliver a new clubhouse, perimeter fence and associated landscaping which sees the facilities at Chapland Road transformed.

Construction works commenced in November 2018 and completed in March 2019, with the club set to reopen on 23rd March 2019. The construction works were carried out by local contractors (Main Contractor - Bryan Gray Building and Joinery, Landscape Contractor – AC Groundworks, Fencing Contractor – Melvin Brothers) who have done an outstanding job on behalf of the club to deliver the project to an exceptionally high standard.

This investment has been the culmination of over 3 years of hard work by the tennis club committee and its members who have worked tirelessly to hold their own fund raising events, secure the support of local businesses and obtain third party grant funding. The funding mix for the redevelopment project has comprised the following:

Club Fundraising and Sponsorship

  • Toolbooth Event
  • Club Sponsored Tennis Event
  • Sponsored walk by Lord Cornet Gary Winning
  • Pub Quizes in The Clydesdale and St.Mary’s Clubrooms
  • Tesco Bag Packing by our members
  • The annual Wimbledon sweep
  • The Gents WoS League fund raiser
  • Support from local businesses and charitable bodies including The Rotary Club of Lanark, 3R Energy, Border Biscuits, Tesco, and Lanark Tyre & Exhaust Centre (LTEC) contributed in various forms to achieve the required amount for funding.

Third Party Funding

  • Sportscotland
  • Viridor Credits Environmental Company
  • Tesco Bags for Life (blue tokens)
  • South Lanarkshire Renewable Energy Fund
  • Tennis Scotland

A FUNDING TOTAL OF: £122,614 against a £141,203 project

Vote of Thanks
The club would like to extend a special thanks to the committee and members of the club who volunteered their time and efforts to take the club through many challenging decision making processes to get it to where it is now, and to deliver facilities that will serve the club’s needs well into the future. The club would also like to express their sincere thanks to the following parties who have provided funding to the project, without whom the project would not have been possible: 3R Energy, Border Biscuits, Viridor Credits Environmental Company, Sportscotland, Tennis Scotland, the LTA, Renewable Energy Fund, Tesco, LTEC and The Rotary Club of Lanark.

Open Day 2019
The club is hosting its Annual Open Day on Saturday 23rd March from 10.30am until 2.30pm where the club extends an open invitation to everyone to come along and see the new clubhouse and find out more about what the club has on offer for the season ahead. There will be coaches available for fun tennis taster sessions for children and adults.

What’s Next
A bright future awaits Lanark Tennis Club with work having already begun on fund raising, funding applications and sponsorship for Phase 2 of the Club’s Redevelopment Plans - New Courts and New Floodlights, with an estimated value of £135,000. 3 years ago this may have seemed impossible, but this target is actually less than what the club has just achieved for Phase 1 (Clubhouse, Fencing and Landscaping).

Dr Allyson Matthews, President of Lanark Tennis Club said:

“Members of Lanark Tennis Club are delighted to announce the successful completion of a brand new clubhouse and surrounding grounds in time for the upcoming 2019 season. The clubhouse is stylish, modern and equipped for use by players of varying abilities and disabilities."

"Thank you to local individuals, businesses and organisations for their financial support and thank you to various sporting bodies for their generous grants. Thanks also to the people of Lanark for their contribution to our fundraising endeavours."

"So, please come along to Chapland Road and see for yourselves. Pick up a racquet and enjoy the great sport that is tennis.”

The club would love to see new faces at Chapland Road this year and details about membership, sponsorship and what the club has on offer can be found on its website:
