Born in Lanark in 1968 Colin McRae was the son of Jimmy McRae, five-time British Rally Champion and brother of Alister, also a rally driver. Colin followed his father in winning the British Rally Championship title in 1991 and 1992 and in 1995 became the first Briton and the youngest to win the World Rally Championship Drivers’ title.
The Subaru World Rally Team won the World Rally Championship Constructors’ title from 1995-1997 in large part due to Colin McRae’s outstanding performances. Colin McRae went on to win nine events in a four-year stay with Ford after which he moved to Citroen. He did not win any events with them but helped the team win the first of three consecutive manufacturers’ titles. In 1996 he was appointed a M.B.E.
McRae died in a helicopter accident in September 2007.
