After a period of declining attendance at race meetings held at Lanark Racecourse during the late 1960s and the early part of the 1970s, the last official flat racing took place at Lanark in September 1977. The decline was largely due to the re-allocation of race dates which left Lanark with only one Saturday meeting in the year.

In December 1977 the Lanark Racecourse Company approached Lanark District Council who owned the land on which the course stood for financial help. Despite prolonged negotiations and a variety of plans being put forward no further official flat racing ever took place at Lanark.
