Lanark Chess Club is one of the oldest of Scotland's chess clubs, having been in continuous existence for more than seventy five years. The Club was founded on 10th November 1944 when a group of about 15 people who were interested in chess met at the Bonnington Hotel in the town. This inaugural meeting was chaired by Dr. D. V. Maxwell Adams, who was elected the Club's first President. The annual subscription was set at 5 shillings (25 pence!).
Lanark Chess Club meets in the Tolbooth, High Street between September and May. Members play competitively in the Lanarkshire League, the Scottish National Chess League, and in club competitions, but also enjoy playing friendly games in the club.
New members, whether young or not so young, experienced or interested in learning the game, are always welcome. The club has a thriving junior section with a skilled coach, and young people from the age of about eight upwards are particularly welcome.
