Wallace site takes a step closer!

Thanks to the generous donations made to the William Wallace mural crowdfunding campaign, the project has taken a huge step forward. Working in partnership with Discover Lanark, Lanark Community Development Trust (LCDT) launched the crowdfunding campaign last month and has raised over £1,000 so far. David Dalgliesh, LCDT’s development manager, said “it’s great to see the public get behind this project, it will make a huge improvement to the currently vacant site and bring a piece of Lanark’s history to life.”

Celebrating Wallace’s links with Lanark, the site will be transformed with a new seating area, a specially commissioned poem that will be carved into the pavement, interactive ‘horrible histories’ style information panels commissioned from illustrator Kate Sheppard and a new piece of public art – a recreation of Wallace’s sword, funded by the Rotary Club of Lanark.

Ali Smith and Rogue-One from Art Pistol, the artists creating the two giant murals, provided an updated image for the left-hand gable wall, as well as an impression of what the mural on the right-hand side will look like. This striking image shows the attack on Lanark Castle which was set alight and burnt to the ground by Wallace and his followers. Antonia Pompa from Discover Lanark said “It is great to have the opportunity to bring two such accomplished artists to Lanark for this project. Their work will transform this gloomy area into a new attraction for the town centre.”
