Lanark Rotarians raised £1500 at a pre-covid fun night

The Rotary Club of Lanark, like all Rotary clubs worldwide, support not only projects within their own communities, but by working in partnership with other organisations improve lives across the globe.

Lanark Rotarians participated in a pre-Covid fun night and raised £1500 which allowed a donation to Y Care International’s Food Security Project in Senegal to be made.

Match funding by Y Care International meant the project donation became £3000 and allowed YMCA in Senegal to deliver a life changing training programme.

Phase one of the project, which was completed in August 2020, aimed to create a new generation of young entrepreneurs in the Casamance province. Once known as the” bread- basket” of Senegal, a combination of extreme poverty, reduced rainfall due to climate change and civil war has resulted in a loss of arable agriculture, unemployment, and deforestation. The YMCA in Senegal has been instrumental in training 400 young people on breeding field crops and processing products of plant origin. After a 2week introductory course in an agricultural camp, the trainees graduated to incubation farms for 1 to 3 months further training. Youth mentors have been appointed to cascade the knowledge to other young people in local communities. Around 195 young entrepreneurs have set up their own businesses, some forming cooperatives. Growing food has empowered young people, particularly women, to provide the food their families and the community desperately needs.
