Duncans had lived in Lanark since the 1600s when they were employed in the smithing trade.
Archibald, William and George, after whom the close is probably named, were however stone masons playing an important role in the building of many of the town’s prominent buildings. At this time the close would have been ringing with the sounds of their hammers and chisels.
