William Lithgow 'Lugless Will'

The famous traveller and writer

1586 – 1645 – William Lithgow “Lugless Will” the famous traveller and writer travels  throughout Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. 1632 publishes “The Total Discourse of the Rare Adventures and Painefull Peregrinations of long nineteene Years Travayles, from  Scotland, to the most Famous Kingdomes in Europe, Asia and Affrica.” Grahame Greene  called it simply “that superb book”.

His last venture into Southern Europe ended when he was arrested and tortured on  suspicion of being a spy by the Spanish Inquisition. He was later rescued and sent to London  where the King paid for treatments to his injuries. Lithgow was again in trouble when he was  jailed for an assault on the Spanish Ambassador.
