Lanark's most famous connection is the town's links to Sir William Wallace, who is believed to have lived, wed and raised sword to start the Battle of Independence right here in Lanark. The town also boasts links to William Smellie, the noted Obstetrician, and William Lithgow 'Lugless Will' the famous traveller. New Lanark Mills became famous under the enlightened management of Robert Owen. Over the years, New Lanark and the stunning Falls of Clyde waterfalls have attracted many notable visitors including Samuel Taylor Coleridge, William & Dorothy Wordsworth and J.M.W. Turner.
