The Royal Burgh of Lanark Museum houses a collection of items which illustrate the ancient and varied history of the town. Lanark is one of Scotland's oldest burghs, and from the time of King William the Lion was a favoured hunting area of the Kings of Scotland. It also has associations with two of Scotland's greatest heroes: William Wallace and King Robert the Bruce.
The Royal Burgh of Lanark Museum Trust was established in 1988. It purchased the old Salvation Army Hall in the West Port during 1990 and set about converting it for use as a Museum. The first exhibition, on the topic of Transport, was opened in the Museum during the spring of 1991. Since then exhibitions have been held each year. The Trust is a member of the Scottish Museums Council and is a founder member of South Lanarkshire Museums Forum (previously Clydesdale Museums Forum).
