Established in 2011, Lanark & District U3A is an organisation of retired and semi-retired "but not retiring" men and women who meet together monthly on a Wednesday afternoon in Lanark Memorial Hall to be informed and entertained by speakers on a wide variety of topics.
The members of the U3A, with the aid of their committee and group coordinators also organise and run groups such as walking, languages, cookery, discussion, theatre visits - in fact anything that interests enough of them to make them want to start a group.
There is an annual membership fee, currently £15, which pays for monthly meetings, insurance, administration costs and the Third Age Trust capitation fee. Members receive the U3A magazine, Third Age Matters, five times a year which can be delivered free to their homes.
Interest groups are run by members for members on an actual cost basis - there is no extra charge for joining a group and you can join as many as you like! And remember - as a member you can be helped to start an interest group for your chosen activity if one does not already exist.
On their website www.u3a-lanark.xyz you will find the date of their next General Meeting and lots of information about past and future meetings, groups and other activities we have been involved in. There are also links there to their representative body, The Third Age Trust.
Feel free to attend one of their monthly meetings or even sample a group without feeling pressured into joining. However they do expect that if you would like to continue attending after your 'free sample' you complete an application form for Lanark & District U3A and join an ever increasing group of friendly, outwardly looking, mentally and physically active group of older adults.
If you would like to speak to someone before coming along you can phone Loraine Swan, who will be happy to answer your questions.
