Lanark has always had a strong connection with aviation and it is no surprise to see that 449 Lanark Squadron of the Air Training Corps are reaching new heights as they equip their cadets with skills to last a lifetime.
The Lanark squadron consists of cadets from across the Clydesdale area and currently has 21 cadets with nine members of staff.
They have been in based in various locations in and around the town but now have their own building on St Leonard Street, opposite Lanark Memorial Hall.
The squadron and corps organises several events for cadets throughout the year to equip them with a wide range of life skills and even gives them the opportunity to take to the skies with the help of skilled instructors.
Cadets participate in the Duke of Edinburgh scheme at gold, silver and bronze levels and the group will shortly head into the Scottish Borders for a two-day hike for their bronze award.
In addition, members of Lanark squadron participate in a comprehensive sports programme including football, rugby, netball, hockey, swimming, track and field and cross country with much success.
The group is active in several community events throughout the year including the Lanimer celebrations and helps raise money for the poppy appeal and various other worthwhile causes.
Membership costs £8 per month and cadets are able to gain a wealth of knowledge and experience that will stand them in good stead in years to come. Cadets have the opportunity to take part in camps out with Lanark including trips down south and even overseas visits to Cyprus, Gibraltar and Germany.
The volunteers of the squadron are all very passionate about the organisation and some have been involved in the air cadets for decades. Safety is at the forefront of their minds and they have a wealth of experience in all situations.
Lanark ATC are always looking for new members and meets on Tuesday and Thursday nights from 7pm until 9.30pm. The air cadets are open to young people aged between 13 and 18 and can be contacted by emai at firstname.lastname@example.org or phone on 01555 678 105.
