Saturday 24/10/2020. WOSFL Conference C

Lanark United 0 v 3 Thorniewood United

Lanark’s long awaited debut in the West of Scotland Football League proved to be a bit of a damp squib as they lost at home in a second half horror show after creating a barrow load of chances in the first half.

Lanark had an “old” new face in the way of Kieran McGurk at left back and it was him who tried to get united forward with some decent balls in to Shug Kerr but Lanark could not capitalise on this, their best early chance came when GAreth Hallford also found Kerr in attack and his early lay off found Marc McGinty on the left but after good work his cross ball ended up causing the visitors no problems.

Thorniewood looked to be dangerous on the break which was a mix of decent play on their part and nervous defending from the home side, and after a mistake PJ O’Donnell was forced in to a challenge in the box which resulted in a penalty, the spot kick came back off the bar and the taker tried to head the loose ball home giving a free kick instead to Lanark.

Another old face in Lewis Hill replaced Gordon Dick on 15 mins and he was to have the best of Lanark’s chances firstly with a header and then with a shot from twelve yards neither of which tested the keeper over much then he was involved again when he linked with Kerr to set up O’Donnell but the final shot went wide of the goal.

The best chance of the half for Lanark came on 32 mins when a Kerr cross fell kindly for McGinty after Hill missed a header but his low shot was well saved from close range and the danger was cleared.

A decent ball out of defence by Cammy Lawson was next to cause the visitors problems as Kerr raced on to it and after outpacing his marker he saw his shot across the keeper hit the post before going wide, the half was ended with another couple of decent chances when a corner from McGurk was headed across goal by Lawson, O’Donnell tried an overhead kick which hit the crossbar before going over then McGinty and Kerr combined but again the chance came to nothing.

Half time

Lanark United 0 v 0 Thorniewood United

As good as Lanark had been in the first half they were poor in the second and fell behind when they failed to clear and a decent cross was headed home for 1-0 to the visitors.

Josh Gracie was then involved in two foul challenges which earned him two cautions and a sending off on the hour mark to make Lanark’s task even greater.

Thorniewood took advantage of the extra man and only decent saves from Hallford in the home goal prevented them in creasing the lead but even he wears beat on 70 mins when his save fell kindly for the visitors and a tap in made it 2-0.

Lanark seemed to be bereft of ideas from this point and in stoppage time lost a 3rd goal to round of the scoring.

All in all a poor day at the office and big improvements will be required to made any headway in the division.
