Lanark United v Shotts Bon Accord (4-3 on penalties)

Lanark United

West Region Sectional League Cup round 2 Monday 12/08/2019

Lanark United 2 v 2 Shotts Bon Accord

Lanark Win 4-3 on penalty kicks.

Lanark took a big scalp in that of Shotts Bon Accord in this cup tie after a good match that saw a crazy late equalising goal for the visitors.

The match was fairly evenly balanced early on but it was Lanark who drew first blood with a fine goal, Cammy Lawson sent a ball from defence that just cleared the Shotts defence, Sean Lindsay was quickest to react and after beating his marker for pace he coolly placed a low shot in to the net for  1-0 after 11 mins.

Shots had a chance to get back on level terms in the 14th min when a free kick from the left was headed toward the top corner of the net but Scott Johnson in the Lanark goal brought off a fine save to keep the home lead intact.

Lanark were next on the attack with a good move down the left when PJ O’Donnell sent Baillie Harvey free his cross was laid back by Jordan Conlon to Jordan Fraser but his shot went just over the Shotts bar.

Shotts won a series of free kicks mid way though the half but none of them proved to be any threat to Johnson’s goal and it was from a free kick of their own that Lanark produced the next chance when O’Donnell was brought down but Lawson’s trundling effort was easily saved by Murdoch in the Shotts goal.

Half time

Lanark United 1 v 0 Shotts Bon Accord.

The second half was a slow starter with only a low corner kick causing problems for the Lanark defence but again Johnson was alert to clear the danger.

The home side doubled their lead with their first attack of any note in the second half in the 63rd min when Fraser was fouled wide on then right, a good delivery was met by an equally good low finish from Mark Haddow at the front post for 2-0 to Lanark.

Lanark spurned a couple of good opportunities to put the game out of the reach of Shotts when Declan Lafferty had an effort saved after a pass from Lindsay then Lawson saw an effort slip wide of the post after being set up by Lafferty.

Lanark paid the price for these missed chances when Haddow gave away a penalty after 79 mins that was hammered home by Malone for 2-1 but they did not let their heads go down and again forced Shotts back on the left hand side when Lawson linked up well with Josh Gracie but Gracie saw his end shot being well saved.

Lanark produced a couple of good moves down the left as the game drew to a close with James Martin being on the ned od good balls fed wide to him, on both occasions he cut inside but his first low drive was saved and his next effort went wide of the target.

Shots drew level in the match in the 2nd minute of stoppage time when Jamie Harrison gave away a rash free kick which sailed over the head of keeper Johnson then hit the far post before coming off a stunned Lanark defence for a crazy own goal to see the match end at 2-2.

Quite incredibly this saw Lanark enter their third penalty shoot out of the season so far despite it only being mid August,

Lanark saw efforts scored by Lindsay, Kerr, Haddow and Martin with keeper Johnson saving twice and with Shotts missing their last penalty Lanark won out by 4 – 3 to progress to the next round of the competition on Wednesday night at home to Rutherglen Glencairn with a 6.45 Kick Off.

Lanark team: Johnson, Gracie, Haddow, Harrison, Lawson, Harvey(Kane), Fraser, O’Donnell, Conlan(Kerr), Lindsay, Lafferty(Martin).
