Border Biscuits removes 90% of plastic from packaging
Award-winning biscuit manufacturer Border Biscuits has today (1 July) outlined its commitment to the environment by eliminating 90% of plastic from its packaging. This announcement by the producer of the UK’s No.1 Dark Chocolate Ginger forms part of a wider £1.6 million investment into its products and processes.
The 90% reduction in plastic saves 537 tonnes of CO2e from the manufacturing process each year; the equivalent of 895 homes improving their energy efficiency through installing better insulation as well as smarter lighting, appliances and heating systems.
Additionally, the overall weight of the packaging has been reduced by 50% in the Ginger, Classic and Traditional retail ranges. This allows double the amount of packs to fit onto a single pallet, making the transportation of products more environmentally friendly and further reducing the company’s net carbon footprint.
Border Biscuits is among the first to proactively change its packaging to achieve a positive environmental impact, with the new design staying true to the eye-catching graphics the brand is known for whilst showcasing the beautifully crafted biscuits on-shelf.
Consumer feedback on the 90% reduction in plastic and updated look of the new packaging has been positive with it being viewed as a more modern design for everyday occasions. It was also noted that consumers believed the packs would be easier to store and maintaining the ability to see the biscuit within the pack remains a major positive to them.*
In addition to unveiling new packaging, Border Biscuits has updated its logo to reflect the premium product it produces. There are twelve beautifully crafted recipes, each produced to exacting standards in order to deliver a high quality biscuit, full of tradition and heritage, every time.
Suzie Carlaw, Marketing Manager at Border Biscuits, said: “As a business we are continuously looking at ways to improve our products and processes and the launch of this new packaging is the latest exciting development in that work.
“Innovating to reduce single-use plastic has been a key focus over the last 12 months and our new packaging means we can address the environmental concerns of our customers without compromising on the high quality of our beautifully crafted biscuits.
“As a family owned business, we pride ourselves on the craftsmanship of baking and are delighted to launch our new packaging, which is available in stores across the UK from this month.”
