Time is running out for Lanark in Bloom to raise money to purchase a new van with the old vehicle set to retire at the end of the month.

The van failed its recent MOT and the costly repair bill means that fixing the vehicle is not viable.

A crowdfunding campaign has already raised over £700 with local organisations also set to offer support.

After initially setting a target of £10,000, the group believes that a used van can be obtained for between £4,000 and £5,000.

Ernest Romer, chairman of Lanark in Bloom, is keen to get back on the road as soon as possible to ensure that the town is looking at its best this summer.

He said: “Unfortunately our 16-year-old van has now come to the end of its useful life as it will be unable to pass an MOT at the end of April without a huge amount of money being spent on it.

“Lanark in Bloom cannot continue to maintain the hanging baskets and tubs throughout the town without a van as it is essential to transport the tools, baskets and large planters as well as towing the water bowser to water everything twice a day during dry weather.

“I hope you agree that Lanark will be a very drab place without the flowers which adorn our streets.”
