79 A.D. Arrival of a combined Roman legionary and auxiliary force under Agricola. The aide de camp is from a cavalry unit called the Ala Sebosiana which was stationed for a while at Castledykes . TheSecond Augusta legion helps with the building of a permanent fort shortly after their arrival , this is abandoned about 100 A.D in the reign of Trajan. It is then re-occupied by Antoninus Pius who built a marching camp about 142 A.D then he had the permanent fort rebuilt.. During this period a bath house may have been built. The Romans leave again sometime after 168 A.D in the reign of Marcus Aurelius. Several centuries later the Romans under Count Theodosius return in 368 A.D but this time they do not stay long and the fort falls into decay.
